Renovation and Extension of Cottage at Atlantic Drive, Downings
This project involved the renovation and extension of an old cottage. Initially it was hoped to retain the old stone walls but when the roof was removed, the walls became completely unstable and the walls had to be built again. The design reinstated the thatch roof over the original cottage and the extension were based on the traditional Irish long house with the barns built onto the side. The kitchen was located in the portion that would normally hold the barn yard building and this allowed large openings to be provided that allow views towards Sheephaven Basy without compromising the aesthetic that the client felt so strongly about
